John was born in The Netherlands and was educated in Holland, the USA and the UK.  He has an MA in Economics from Cambridge University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London.  In 1977 he joined Grindlays Bank Group, rising to be Head of Corporate Finance in 1980 after arranging several successful IPOs.  In 1983 he joined Brown Shipley & Co, the independent investment bank that was one of the inner circle of banks called the Accepting Houses that had preferred access to the Bank of England.  He rapidly expanded its corporate finance business and was also appointed Head of its US investment banking and private equity business.  In 1988 he was appointed Group Chief Executive of Brown Shipley Holdings PLC, the listed holding company.

John left Brown Shipley in 1991 to become Group Chief Executive of Provident Financial plc, the consumer credit and motor insurance company.  He was appointed Chairman in 1996, a post he held for the next 17 years.  In 1997 he led the strategic decision to start an international division with substantial businesses being created in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Mexico.  A decade later Provident joined the FTSE 100 and the international business was demerged as International Personal Finance plc with a market capitalisation of £600 million.  He also led the strategic decision to recruit a team of credit card experts to launch Vanquis Bank, which now has pre-tax profits of £200 million. During John’s tenure as CEO and Chairman, Provident Financial plc shareholders received a 44x total shareholder return (with dividends re-invested).

During this same period John founded a publishing and media business Huveaux PLC (2001 – 2008, now called Dods Group PLC) which he listed on AIM; and was also Chairman of Eidos PLC (2002 – 2005), Finsbury Smaller Companies Trust PLC (1992 – 2003), and JP Morgan Fleming Technology Trust PLC (1998 – 2003).  Working with private equity, he became Chairman of Hyperion Insurance Group Limited (2009 – 2014) delivering 3i a 22% IRR over five years, and Marlin Financial Group Limited (2010 – 2014) delivering Duke Street Capital a 43% IRR over four years.  He was also a non-executive director of the Medical Defence Union (2002 – 2005).

In 2014 John founded Non-Standard Finance plc (“NSF”) and raised £103 million by listing it as a cash shell on the London Stock Exchange in February 2015 with the purpose of acquiring a number of consumer credit companies in the non-standard sector.  NSF has now completed 4 acquisitions and raised a total of £540 million in equity and debt, establishing itself as a major competitor in its sector.  John is also Chairman of Paratus AMC Limited, the mortgage lending and servicing company owned by Fortress Investment Group LLC funds.

John was formerly Council Member of the CBI; on the Advisory Council of the Princes Trust; an Alternative Member of the Takeover Panel; and a Board Member of the Public Catalogue Foundation.

John married for the second time in 2015 to Eva who is a director of Dance Umbrella and Strongback Productions.
